International Cycling Journalists Tested the Road World Championships Route
Ten journalists from the best-selling cycling and travel magazines in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium came to Salzburg at the initiative of the SLT, in order to become acquainted with the site of the 2006 UCI Road World Championships. With them was also the former Belgian Tour de France victor Lucien van Impe.
‘We have succeeded in bringing well-known journalists from high-circulation magazines and newspapers, along with Lucien van Impe, to pay us a visit here in the Province of Salzburg. The 2006 Road World Championships have already attracted a lot of interest,“ says the pleased SLT head Leo Bauernberger. The varied press tour programme led the media representatives and cycling professional Lucien van Impe on the cycling championship route from Halwang to Obertrum via Elixhausen on Friday.
The professional cyclist Lucien van Impe has already been associated with the Salzburg Province for some time. The “Lucien van Impe Classics” has taken place in Uttendorf in Pinzgau since 2003. This international cycling sport event with mountain cycling time trials on various courses will take place during the first week of July 2006. Van Impe will be there once again to experience the route named after him during the “Lucien Van Impe-Classics”. “I’m very enthusiastic about the Uttendorf course”, says Lucien van Impe about “his” route. In addition to the Road Championships course, the journalists were also able to get to know the diverse cycling opportunities in the Salzburg Province. With its Mozart and Tauern routes, as well as the Salzkammergut, Mur, and Enns cycling routes and a further 24 bikeways, the Salzburg Province has a cycling route network of more than 2,000 kilometers at its disposal.

In Salzburg cycling is very popular. The bicycle is the most favoured means of transportation in the population, the network of cycle paths is one of the most densely structured throughout Austria. Additionally professional cycling is quite significant too. Thus I am especially pleased that we succeeded in our bid to host the 2006 Road World Championships in Salzburg. The World Championships as one of the biggest sport events, taking place on venues all over world and each year, is an important multiplicator for race cycling and an unforgettable event for the fans of cycling – hence the preparations run at full speed. Already now I am looking forward to the competitions and the finishes in the heart of our city!
