Green Light for the Road Cycling World Championships

Following the site visit by the UCI Supervising Committee, which took place yesterday and today at the Salzburg Congress with high-ranking representatives of the World Cycling Sport Association UCI, there was a lot of praise expressed for the work that had already been done in connection with the Cycling World Championship 2006, which will be the biggest sporting event of the coming year.
Rocco Cattaneo, the President of the Supervising Committee, lauded the commitment and the exemplary work done by General Secretary Wolfgang Weiss and his team: “If we had to carry out the world championships in Salzburg in two weeks, then we could do that in Salzburg without a hitch.” Gerrit Middag, the person responsible for the UCI Road World Championship, also praised the Salzburg “worker bees“, but also warned against being lulled into a sense of complacency: “A great deal of work has already been accomplished. Wolfgang Weiss and his work teams, though, should not lean back after their magnificent efforts and slack off now. All of the concepts look very good, they must keep it up“. “We will”, the General Secretary Wolfgang Weiss assured him in reply, and he also thanked the UCI representatives for their excellent support.
During the next few weeks all of the concepts presented to the UCI will be introduced to the public. The citizens of Salzburg had already been informed about the routes, but the UCI representatives were only able to picture it for the first time today. UCI Sports Coordinator Philippe Chevalier, a former winner of a Tour de France stage, said that the course was particularly difficult in the Hallwang area. And he added: “Big countries will have problems controlling the field. However, because they may only send a maximum of nine cyclists into the race as of this year,” Chevalier thinks that the races will be more exciting that way and that there could be more opportunities for less known participants.

In Salzburg cycling is very popular. The bicycle is the most favoured means of transportation in the population, the network of cycle paths is one of the most densely structured throughout Austria. Additionally professional cycling is quite significant too. Thus I am especially pleased that we succeeded in our bid to host the 2006 Road World Championships in Salzburg. The World Championships as one of the biggest sport events, taking place on venues all over world and each year, is an important multiplicator for race cycling and an unforgettable event for the fans of cycling – hence the preparations run at full speed. Already now I am looking forward to the competitions and the finishes in the heart of our city!
