The area surrounding Austria’s tallest mountain, the Grossglockner, is a veritable El Dorado for nature lovers and Alpine enthusiasts, demanding top-notch performances from hobby and pro bikers alike.  The big annual biking event is the “Glocknerkönig Classic”, a true highlight of the biking season, slated this year for June 4. After the mountain stage along one of the most beautiful scenic roads in all the Alps, the “King of the Glockner” will be crowned (highest point of the race: 2,500 m).  Very much leaving his mark on this year’s International Cycling Week from  July 1 – 8, is the winner of the 1976 Tour de France and 6-time king of the mountains, Belgian cyclist Lucien van Impe.  At the Top Race in Uttendorf on July 15, triathletes will get to test their mettle.  A 600-metre swim, 19 km mountain-bike ride and 5.5 km mountain run, before reaching the finish line at the Rudolfshütte Alpine Center (elev. 2,315 m). Two days before the opening of the 2006 UCI Road World Championships in Salzburg a so-called "Jedermann-Charity-Cycling Tour" will take place on the original track of the Road Races. This charity event, which is of benefit for the biggest austrian charity organisation "Licht ins Dunkel", will take place on 17th of September. Actor Peter Simonischek is going to be the godfather this uniqe opening event.
